Harbour Town Golf Links Hilton Head

Welcome back, golf enthusiasts! As we continue our exciting journey through the lush fairways and challenging greens of Hilton Head, I’m thrilled to present the second installment of our three-part series. Last time, we explored one of the iconic courses that make this island a golfer's dream destination. Today, we’ll dive into the renowned Harbour Town Golf Links, a course celebrated for its challenging design and picturesque scenery. So, grab your clubs, visualize that perfect swing, and join me once again as we tee off into the heart of Hilton Head’s golfing legacy. Let’s make this round one to remember!

Harbour Town Golf Links at Sea Pines Resort

Harbour Town Golf Links, created by legendary architect Pete Dye in 1969 with Jack Nicklaus as his design consultant, was the second course on our Hilton Head journey. The anticipation was high, especially since it hosts the RBC Heritage, a PGA Tour event that follows The Masters Tournament. This course is a rare gem as it’s one of the few professional courses open to the public, unlike most that are private country clubs. One unique aspect that adds to its prestige is the requirement of having at least one caddie per tee time, which is going to be my first time playing with a caddie.

Harbour Town Golf Links is a par 71 course stretching 7,000 yards—not particularly long by PGA standards but incredibly challenging. With a golf rating of 75.6 and a slope of 148, it proved to be the most challenging and visually stunning course I have ever played.

The course is famed for its narrow fairways and small greens, demanding precision and strategic play over sheer power. Each hole offers its own set of challenges, from perilous par-3s to intricate par-4s and formidable par-5s. The 18th hole, known for its iconic lighthouse backdrop, is one of the most photographed in golf and provides a dramatic finish to any round.

Golf Course Rates

The price for playing at the Harbour Town Golf Links varies due to several factors, including the date, availability, time, and weather. The cost ranges from $300 to $540 per person. Given the high cost, I believe everyone should treat themselves to a round at Harbour Town Golf Links at least once in their lifetime. I recommend going in the summer when the price is lower and there are fewer people.

Given the high cost, I believe everyone should treat themselves to a round at Harbour Town Golf Links at least once in their lifetime. I recommend visiting in the summer, even though it's the high season, because the warm weather is ideal for enjoying the beach as well as all the outdoor activities. For lower prices on rounds, the best time is during the low season in winter since there are fewer people on the golf course, but the weather is not as pleasant.

There's an additional $9 fee to enter the Sea Pines Resort that may only be paid in cash. This resort fee might raise an eyebrow or two, but it's essential to understand the reason behind it. The roads within Sea Pines are privately owned and operated, and this fee contributes to road maintenance and security. While it may add a small cost to your golfing adventure, it's a minor expense for the privilege of playing on these well-maintained and beautiful courses.

Valuable information to note is that registered vacation guests of the resort and visitor staying with property owners can obtain a complimentary pass for access during their stay. This added convenience enhances the experience for those staying within the Sea Pines Resort, a great destination on Hilton Head, offering a diverse selection of accommodations, including houses and condos

A Day I’ll Never Forget

It was a sunny Tuesday when I prepared for my round, arriving early to explore the clubhouse and practice range. Meeting my caddie, who was just a few years older than me. Initially, I was so excited, as this was my first time playing with a caddie, fulfilling a long-held dream of mine. It truly made me feel like a professional golfer. His insights on yardage and course tips were invaluable, making the beautiful and challenging course feel a bit more manageable.

Despite not being the longest course, the strategic challenges were immense—from tall grass and vast bunkers to abundant water hazards. Proudly, I chipped in for a birdie on hole 6, a round highlight. However, a rain interruption on hole 13 sent us back to the clubhouse for an hour, but we eventually resumed and finished the round.

Harbour Town Golf Links offers a visual delight that captures the essence of coastal golfing at its finest. Nestled within the Sea Pines Resort on Hilton Head Island, this course is framed by the natural beauty of dense maritime forests and the expansive Calibogue Sound. The fairways are lined with towering pines and ancient, moss-draped oaks, providing a scenic backdrop while adding a layer of challenge to your game.

One of the most iconic symbols of Harbour Town is the striking red and white lighthouse that stands sentinel over the 18th hole, a beacon synonymous with the course itself. As you navigate the meticulously maintained greens, you'll be treated to soft sea breezes and the gentle rustling of leaves, creating a serene atmosphere that enhances the picturesque setting.

Each hole offers its own distinct panorama, ensuring that a round at Harbour Town Golf Links is as visually rewarding as it is challenging. Whether you're drawn by the beauty of the landscape or the lure of a challenging game, Harbour Town promises an unforgettable golfing experience.

Concluding My Harbour Town Adventure

Playing at Harbour Town Golf Links was an exhilarating experience, and it’s hard to believe I actually played there. Despite the expense, the value of the experience justifies the cost, and I highly recommend this course to everyone. It’s a must-try for any golfer seeking to enjoy a full experience of history, challenge, and beauty. It offers an unparalleled golfing experience that combines challenging gameplay with breathtaking scenery. The requirement of having at least one caddie per tee time not only elevates the prestige of the course but also enhances the overall experience, making it truly memorable. Whether you're a seasoned golfer or trying something new, like playing with a caddie for the first time, Harbour Town promises a round of golf you won't soon forget.

Stay tuned for the next chapter of our Hilton Head golf adventure, where I will recount my solo 18-hole journey at the iconic George Fazio Course. This course wrapped up my Hilton Head trip, and I am eagerly looking forward to the next chance to return.
